The purpose of a M/ETHANE report is to provide a structured and standardised method for communicating key information at a major incident from the scene to control rooms and other responding agencies.

It can either be given as a full “METHANE” report, where a major incident is being declared, or a shorter “ETHANE” report to gain the benefit of the standardised structure without declaring an major incident at that time.
